Spring in the Potting Shed

News from Brockenhurst Flower Club

Brockenhurst Flower Club, our friends & guests extended an enthusiastic welcome to the amazingly talented Mig Kimpton for their March demonstration – ‘Spring in the Potting Shed’. Mig is well known to many of us & is a multiple RHS Chelsea Flower Show medal winner & a highly skilled presenter. This was an incredible afternoon, and it was wonderful to welcome so many of our friends from many other clubs.

Design 1. Presented in a round container with a bark surround filled with small glass jars and flower tubes, into which mixed foliage and twigs from the garden were placed. Slender Chincherinchee added height with pure yellow Tulips creating a beautiful free flowing design. Finally, Choisya (Sundance) was added giving depth to the base.

Design 2. An upright wood slice came next on which Mig made two designs. A base was created using Fatsia, Hebe and Euonymus. Stunning green Anthuriums were placed taking the eye through the arrangements followed by Carnations which took the colour through the design. Looped steel grass linked the two pieces together.

Design 3. A tall, slender, conical wicker container with oasis secured at the top displayed tall Pussy Willow and a dramatic feel by the clever use of Aspidistra leaves. Height was created using variegated Phormium leaves. Stunning cerise Antirrhinums brought elegance to the design enhanced by beautiful bi-colour orange Roses.

Design 4. A tall stand covered with lovely textured Apple Bark then took centre stage. Laurel and Forsythia were placed giving height. Palms and yellow Genista gave a light airy feel to the overall arrangement. Choisya, small yellow Sunflowers and yellow Germini then scampered through the design. A stunning spring arrangement.

Design 5. A large willow ring placed on a basket used mixed foliage to ‘sweep through the design’ of Twigs, Pussy Willow & Elaeagnus, followed with the use additional greening up of yellow Genista, Skimmia and Choisya. An abundance of beautiful Tulips were then placed within the foliage creating a sea of Spring pleasure.

Design 6. Finally, Mig produced a large Urn in which he created a flowing horizontal design using foliage from Genista, Eucalyptus, Palms, Fatsia, Pussy willow, Pittosporum, Choisya & Myrtle. Vibrant blooms of purple Statice & deep pink Pom-Pom Dahlias gave impact and texture with additional cerise Germini and Rosemary creating a fabulous arrangement.

During the demonstration, Mig kept us all entertained with his theatrical stories and lively encounters with life. A truly wonderful afternoon.
